Well, it’s been a long time coming hasn’t it? At last, something CB has been bending my ear for years about now is beginning to materialise now, a soul t shirt website for all us Original Soul Boys and Girls. Come to think of it it’s probably been over thirty six years in the making. That’s when I printed some one colour, T shirts with soul stars on them and placed our first advert in Blues and Soul. I took some photos of CB wearing them on Margate beach along with a friend of ours, Pete from Mottingham as he looked pretty cool in his ‘fro! (later on he joined David Bowies band as his drummer). The T shirts then were 80p each (including postage and packing). We had another option – long sleeve (get this)- flared tees for £1.20 each! We didn’t sell a great deal of them, in fact we got a letter from Al Greens manager telling us to stop printing his artists’ picture on our tees. Many years later we met Al and reminded him of the incident in 1972. He was really lovely and said he appreciated somebody that we had recognised him all those years ago! Later on a staff writer at Blues and Soul got a merchandise pitch at the first Purley All Dayer. He didn’t know any T shirt printers then but ‘remembered an old advert in Blues and Soul’ and that’s how we got the phone call that restarted this whole Soul T shirt thing. We printed up two designs for Pete – a National Soul Festival tee and took a punt on a slogan ‘May the Funk Be with You’ because the first Star Wars film had just come out and loads of people were saying ‘May The Force be with You’ – we just changed that a bit! We have got this site up in a hurry. Later we want to add a weekenders page (your T shirts from your favourite weekender) and maybe, some daily downloaded music and a Soul Calendar page as well. We will be adding this all as we go along but we thought we had better get some tee shirts up as quickly as possible.
